On Friday, Cuba announced it was ready to receive U.S. commercial flights starting next week. JetBlue is set to begin direct flights on August 31 with a flight from Fort Lauderdale to Villa Clara. American Airlines will start flying from Miami to the provinces in September, and other airlines will follow suit. By the end of the year there will be 20 daily flights to Havana.
Deputy Transportation Minister Eduardo Rodriguez told local media that U.S. airlines would be handled the same as the other 110 airlines that currently fly to Cuba and with the same attention to security issues that are already a part of Cuba’s system.
