Southwest Airlines crew and staff arrived at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Saturday and four planes were made ready for flights from Atlanta on Sunday. The airline is launching a total of 15 flights daily from Atlanta with destinations that include Denver, Baltimore/Washington, Chicago, Houston, and Austin.
One of the reasons Southwest acquired AirTran last year was to get into Atlanta. James Lyle, an AirTran aircraft inspector, said they have bee waiting for this day for a long time and hundreds of employees from both AirTran and Southwest cheered and held up signs on Concourse C to celebrate the launch of the new flights. On Saturday afternoon AirTran also held an event with Georgia Aquarium at the North Terminal baggage claim area.
