Those who plan on flying for the Thanksgiving holiday this year will have to be prepared for very full planes. Airlines for America say that Thanksgiving flights will be 90% full on the busiest travel days, which will be on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday and Monday after. The average load factor, or number of filled seats, in 2011 was 82%, but with airlines merging and consolidating flights, this number has grown.
Approximately 24 million Americans are expected to fly over the Thanksgiving holiday, between November 16 and 27. In order to avoid the crowds Airlines for American says fly early or stay home. Joe Brancatelli, a travel expert who writes Joesentme.com, says it is the busiest time to fly because Thanksgiving applies to everyone, regardless of race or religion, and everyone has somewhere to be during the holiday.
