The main runway at Gatwick Airport closed down Sunday when a hole was discovered in
the surface of the runway during an inspection. According to a spokesperson, the closure was done as a “precautionary measure.” Eight flights were diverted and several were delayed approximately 10 minutes starting at around 7:40 pm, circling the airport until the second runway was opened so that the engineers could repair the tarmac. The main runway reopened at 11:25 pm.
This is the second time this summer that a hole has opened on the runway. The first time was in June. Aviation experts say the warmer weather and increase in flights can be blamed.
