Virgin Atlantic gets rid of flights between Hong Kong and Sydney
Starting in May, Virgin Atlantic will discontinue flights between Sydney and Hong Kong. The company blames the weakening Australian dollar and increasing costs to operate the flights.
The flights have been offered for almost 10 years and Virgin Atlantic’s decision to cease the service means Cathay Pacific and Qantas will have to take over the demand. Job losses at operations in both Hong Kong and Sydney will result. In total, 47 people have jobs in Sydney between office and ground crew positions. One hundred and fifty-eight people are based in Hong Kong. It could take up to a month before the announcements will be made advising which positions will be made redundant as a result.
