A flight leaving St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport had to make an emergency landing Monday. The Allegiant Air flight was on its way to Richmond, Virginia but was forced to land in Greensboro, North Carolina after an engine problem. The flight had 146 passengers in addition to crew. Passengers said they smelled smoke and heard a popping noise shortly before they were told they would be making an emergency landing. One passenger said there was loud noise and smoke in the cabin and that they were told that the left engine suffered “catastrophic” failure at 33,000 feet. Allegiant officials say that a maintenance team is looking into the cause.
