The Republican National Convention is set to run in late August and, while there are some airspace restrictions being enforced, commercial airlines will operate on a normal schedule. However, any air traffic other than military and commercial airlines will need to plan ahead as there will be federal security guidelines in place for a 10-mile radius around St. Petersburg on August 26 and around Tampa for the convention from August 27-30.
The restrictions that are being put into place are similar to those used during the Tampa Super Bowls. Anyone traveling to the convention via private plane will be affected. St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport is also making plans to ensure they can handle the additional air traffic that will be coming in due to the convention. The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to publish its local flight restrictions 30 days prior to the convention. These restrictions will be in effect from 9:00 am to midnight.
