Sandra Inutiq, Nunavut's Languages Commissioner, has written a letter to First Air asking why safety instructions in the native language of Inukitut aren't played on some flights. She says she's been on several flights when flying within the territory that failed to give safety instructions in Inuktitut. In her letter she said “Look, when you're not airing Inuktitut safety briefings, it's like Inuit lives are less important.”
Last year, several passengers complained about the lack of Inuktitut safety procedure recordings on some of the flights, and First Air said that only on rare occasions does that happen, and blamed time constraints. Canadian North says it plays all safety instructions in the language of the territory but will investigate if its new partners in the codeshare agreement are doing so as well.
