Moscow has been experiencing heavy snowfall that on Monday night slowed traffic to a halt and caused the diversion of 13 flights. The snowstorm started on Sunday morning and about one-third of the annual average precipitation for the month of March fell on Moscow since the storm began. The Emergency Situations Ministry is warning people that the storm could cause reduced visibility and unsafe road conditions.
The ministry is also warning that the heavy snow and winds could cause damage to power lines. On Monday morning, there was 20 km of lined up traffic on Moscow Ring Road and there were significant traffic jams in other areas as well. In addition, during the overnight hours, 13 flights that were headed to Sheremetyevo Airport and Vnukovo were diverted to Domodedovo Airport in the southeast. However, all three airports were reporting normal flight operations as of Monday morning.
