Air India has cut many flights in Kerala, causing hundreds of passengers to be stranded across the state. Early reports indicate as many as 168 flights have been cancelled and authorities have said the reason for the cancellations is that a large number of aircraft had to be Uttar Pradesh for use by the Haj pilgrims in northern India. Many passengers who were scheduled to fly out on Saturday morning were only informed at 3:00 am that the Air India Express flight to Sharjah was cancelled.
Dozens of passengers, many with infants in arms, complained that they had travelled a long way to be at the airport in time for their flights. Officials said in return that they were powerless over the situation as the flights were being diverted to UP. Some of the flights that were cancelled include those to Doha, Sharjah, Manama, Dubai, Kuwait, and Riyadh. K.V. Muraleedharan, an expert in the travel industry, says there is a conspiracy behind this because the only flights being diverted are those from Kerala.
