Taiwan flight crashes in the Taiwan Strait
TransAsia Flight GE222 crashed in the Taiwan Strait between China and Taiwan late Wednesday while trying to land in stormy weather. There were 58 people on board; 48 were killed. The plane, an twin-engine turboprop ATR-72, was being operated by TransAsia Airways and was coming from a city in Southern Taiwan. Flight GE222 crashed into houses and cars in the village of Xixi just outside the airport. It was the plane’s second landing attempt in the winds and rain.
This is Taiwan’s first fatal air incident in 12 years. Two aboard were French citizens and the rest were Taiwanese, according to Transport Minister for Taiwan. Approximately 200 military personnel were ordered to the scene to help in recovery efforts.
