Investigation Reveals MPs have Spent Nearly £500,000 on Business Class Flights
The Daily Telegraph has reported the results of an investigation that has revealed MPs have spent nearly £500,000 on business class flights since the general election in 2010. These business class flights can cost as much as £850 per seat. The information regarding the expenses related to business class tickets comes from records kept by the IPSA, which has shown that Falkirk representative Eric Joyce (spent £43,410) and the shadow defense secretary Jim Murphy (spent £33,224) to be the top two spenders.
Those booking business class flights are taking advantage of a loophole in the regulations put into place after the 2009 expenses scandal. According to the rule, an MP may book a business class ticket only if it does not cost more than a standard ticket. These MPs are booking their business class fares far enough in advance that they are cheaper than a standard class ticket closer to the date of travel.
