There is a proposed merger between US Airways and United Airlines and this merger is being supported by officials in Onslow County. However, these same officials are not in support of forcing the combined airline to give up some of its landing slots. Onslow County officials are worried that if these slots were to be given up that they would lose direct flights between Albert J. Ellis Airport and Washington, D.C.
Airport Director Chris White made a statement saying that if the Department of Justice requires the combined airline to give up some of their landing slots, some of the smaller airports will lose some of their direct flights to Washington, D.C. White says the airlines make more money from the bigger airports, so if they have to cut clots, they are more likely to cut those to the smaller airports first.
