Lufthansa will offer broadband Internet on flights within Europe in 2016
Starting in 2016, Lufthansa will offer broadband Internet on both short- and medium-haul flights within Europe. The first aircraft to offer the service will be outfitted in early summer. An announcement from the airline said that passengers will be able to stream, use apps, and read and send emails. In addition, flyers will be able to receive and send text messages and transfer data based on their own phone contracts. Calls on board will still be banned.
The service will be based on broadband satellite technology from Inmarsatès Global Xpress network. Inmarsat just recently launched its third satellite and Lufthansa is set to be its first aviation customer.
