There are a group of ferret owners who are petitioning airlines in Canada because they feel they are being discriminated against. They argue that they cannot take their pets on flights the same way that cat and dog owners can. They have started an online petition that asks WestJet and Air Canada to reconsider their policies on pet travel and the petition efforts are being spearheaded by Rachel Schafli, who is flying from Toronto to B.C. to see her family for the holidays and wants to bring her ferret.
Instead of bringing her ferret with her on her flight, Schafli had to take Rolo to a cargo facility that is located 12 km from Pearson Airport and pay $125 each way for him to fly in cargo to Maple Ridge, B.C. WestJet and Air Canada allow cats and small dogs in soft carriers and WestJet also allows rabbits and birds on flights. Larger animals must ride in checked baggage for an additional fee. The airlines say that pets in the cabin must be in soft-sided carriers and ferrets will chew through the soft material. Ferrets need a hard carrier, which are a safety concern.
