In 2015, planes inbound for Toronto were attacked by bright lasers 173 times. Any one of those attacks could have led to fatal crashes. The Toronto Star analyzed numbers pulled from the Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System to arrive at that result. The numbers from 2015 are a drastic increase from 2014, when the number was at 114. Peel Region police have confirmed 111 reported laser strikes in 2015. Acting Sergeant Jeffrey Sharp said “If you look at Transport Canada's records, and you look at our numbers ... it's been a steady climb from 2007 forward.” In 2011, Peel police counted 49 laser strikes.
Pilots and officers have reported that the lasers stayed on them, which indicates intentional attacks. If aimed at pilots during takeoff and landing, the green lasers used could blind the pilot and endanger the aircraft and everyone on board.
