The arrival and departure of 32 flights were delayed about two hours starting at 7:30 am because of heavy smoke in Chennai. The first day of the Pongal festival, Bhogi, meant that people were burning things to celebrate. Aside from one flight from Oman, all the flights were domestic. A departing Air India flight to Mumbai was stopped just before taking off since it didn’t have clearance from air traffic control. It left about two hours later. As per the festival, the day before Bhogi, people gather up old and unused things to focus on change. At dawn they light a bonfire with wooden furniture no longer wanted as well as logs of wood and other burnables.
