Flights were diverted and passengers had long delays at Gatwick Sunday after a hole opened on the tarmac on the main runway. A spokesperson for the airport said that between 15 and 20 flights that were supposed to land at Gatwick on Sunday were diverted to Bournemouth and Stansted airports. The runway was closed temporarily at 3:48 pm while the issue was investigated and operations were switched to the secondary runway to keep flights moving into and out of Gatwick but there were delays and cancelations as a result. The airport announced that passengers should check with their airlines as to their flight status before heading to the airport.
