After a takeoff was aborted on Tuesday at OR Tambo International Airport, flights were delayed. A spokesperson from the Airports Company SA, Unathi Batyashe-Fillis, said that flight delays after the aborted takeoff started at about 7:00 am and have been only five minutes. She also said that, although one would think they are experiencing many delays, they are, in fact, not, partly because it was not a peak time at the airport.
The aborted takeoff was a Global Aviation plane and the decision to abort was made by the captain after one of the wheels caught fire during takeoff. The flight was carrying 120 passengers and was on its way to Malawi. No injuries were reported and fire crews extinguished the fire. The runway that was affected is expected to reopen at midday, but must remain closed until officials of the Civil Aviation Authority have completed their investigation of the runway.
