WestJet will be arriving in Antigua for the first time on October 28, with their new twice-weekly direct flights from Toronto to Antigua. These new flights will create 7000 new seats into and out of Antigua between the first October flight and April of 2013. Flights will operate on Sundays and Wednesdays throughout the winter season. In addition, WestJet intends to go against the norm by offering flight-only options rather than package deals.
Neil Forrester, the general manager of the Antigua Hotels & Tourist Association (AHTA), said that these new flights will produce opportunities for small resorts. Traditionally, airlines would pair with tour operators to only offer package deals to a few hotels in the area, hotels operated by two or three big companies. With the new flight-only option, small- and mid-size hotels and resorts will be able to market themselves to Canadians.
