Despite reconsidering, Qatar Airways has made a firm decision that they will cease flights to Cebu and Doha. Nigel Paul C. Villarete, general manager of Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA), said that Qatar has only said that they will consider re-establishing the route in the future. He also said the reasons given by Qatar Airways were high fuel costs and the carrier taxes the Philippine government requires of airlines flying into the country.
These taxes amount to a 3% carrier tax and a 2.5% gross Philippines billing tax that are charged to all international carriers. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will stop its direct flights from Manilla to Amsterdam and instead they will make a stopover in Taiwan. There are other airlines interested in picking up the route, according to Mr. Villarete, including Etihad and Emirates Airways.
