Southwest Airlines is now offering the first direct flights between New Orleans and Key West and as passengers stepped off the first flight in Key West on Saturday, they were greeted with the royal treatment – the red carpet was rolled out, a conch shell was being blown, and fire trucks were giving salute. The new service will operate daily from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport to the island getaway.
The nonstop, direct flights will be operated on Boeing 737-700 aircraft and will be less than two hours in duration. Southwest began serving Key West last November when they started offering flights from both Orlando and Tampa Bay. These were both routes that were previously offered by AirTran Airways.
