Right now, about six helicopters can take off every hour from the Downtown Heliport at Pier 6 in Lower Manhattan. That will soon change, though, since a new deal was struck between the NYCEDC and the helicopter and jobs council stating that there will be no tourist helicopter flights on Sundays, and 50 percent fewer flights every other day of the week. The deal was the solution to noise complaints from residents. In addition, all flights over Governor's Island will be halted. Starting in April, the Sunday flights will be grounded and tour operators have until January 2017 to reduce their flights by half. Operators will have to submit monthly reports regarding the number of flights conducted and if they violate the terms of the agreement, they will be punished with further cuts in permitted flights.
