Last week US air marshals travelled on all flights from the UK to the US due to fears of “underpants” bombs. Last week also marked the one year anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden. Just days before, new sophisticated explosive technology was discovered and a device smuggled out of Yemen by a double agent inside al-Qaeda. The bomb is designed to be hidden in underwear and to avoid detection by metal detectors.
Explosives experts have examined the new technology and say it is more sophisticated than the bomb that almost brought down the trans-Atlantic flight to Detroit on Christmas day in 2009. It is unclear whether the bomb was to simply be transported or whether the individual was supposed to be a suicide bombers, but at this point there have been no indications of tickets bought or target chosen. Fears now rest on the fact that there may be other bombs and that some may be surgically implanted. John Brennan, the White House counter-terrorism adviser, said that there may be other bombers at large.
