In most countries, you have to line up at a check-in to show your passport in order to get your boarding pass. Now, United Airlines offers passport scanning in its app so you can scan and verify your passport and go straight to Departures instead of standing in line to check in. All you have to do is scan your passport using your iPhone’s camera, and the app sends the information to Jumio Inc, a credentials management company, where the passport is verified. Then you can download your boarding pass. If your passport is already registered with the carrier, you don’t have to scan it again. The app can not yet verify visas, so if you need one for the destination you are visiting, you’ll need to check in.
