Fort McMurray Airport is gearing up for a major expansion as they are bursting at the seems and with the expansion will come their first international flights, which they hope to have coming into the airport before the end of the year. Scott Clements, president and chief executive of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority, has been talking with 11 airlines over the past month, making business pitches and working on bringing in international service.
On Tuesday he announced the results of these negotiations thus far. They hope to be offering direct service to two US cities by November. At this point the destinations have not been confirmed, although the most likely candidates are Denver and Las Vegas. He has also been discussing flights to Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, and San Francisco and flights to Mexico will also begin this coming winter. Clements says they have a passenger market of 50,000 to 75,000 and he thinks it will be worth the while of the airlines.
